Gucci staff strike over plans to relocate to Milan
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Christy Choi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Dozens of employees at Italian fashion house Gucci staged a strike on Monday to protest the company’s decision to move its design office from Rome to Milan. CGIL has argued that asking staff to move to Milan, approximately 300 miles north of the capital, in the first half of 2024 was tantamount to laying them off. Alessandro Garofalo/ReutersFollowing the departure of creative director Alessandro Michele in 2022, Gucci owner Kering shook up the label’s top management. While sales of luxury goods were on a tear earlier in the year, the market cooled in the second half of 2023. The designer gave the old Gucci codes a refresh sending babydoll dresses, tailored short suits, fringed skirts, hoodies and bejeweled knitwear down the runway.

REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters) - FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried's lawyer on Tuesday said the now-bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange's investments were not "reckless and frivolous," pushing back against testimony by a former executive who called its spending on marketing and celebrity endorsements excessive. This is the third week of Bankman-Fried's trial in Manhattan federal court on charges related to the looting billions of dollars in customer funds to make investments, donate to U.S. political campaigns and prop up his hedge fund, Alameda Research. Bankman-Fried, who has pleaded not guilty, has argued that while he made mistakes running FTX, he never intended to steal funds. This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. In today's big story, we're looking at how a Google loophole brings advertisements for illegal drugs hosted on defaced government websites to the top of search results. Previously, that wasn't an issue since these web pages never appeared in Google searches because website owners restricted Google from indexing them. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe result is people using internal search functions to create webpages advertising drugs on websites viewed as trustworthy by Google. Yet, if Gucci’s new designer Sabato de Sarno was rattled before he took his bow for the Italian luxury house at Milan fashion week on Friday, he didn’t show it. Where Michele was an overt maximalist with retro references, de Sarno mined the Gucci archive and codes in a more stripped-back way. Oxblood red dominated the collection, inspired by The Savoy hotel in London where Guccio Gucci worked in the late 1800s. The bling was, in fact, a reference to the Marina jewelry collection that appeared in Gucci campaigns in the late 1960s. The rest of the embellished crystal designs were inspired by embroideries de Sarno found on 1960s clutch bags in the Gucci archive.

Meta is promoting its new app, Threads, with strong links to Instagram — but so far it is missing most of the app's biggest users. Just six of the top 20 most-followed Instagram accounts have signed up to the Twitter-competitor app so far. It also looks like @instagram is the only account to reach 1 million followers on Threads, as of Thursday morning. That makes sense considering it's also the most-followed account on Instagram with 645 million followers, but the next six-biggest accounts are yet to appear on Threads. Mark Zuckerberg said 10 million users signed up to Threads in the first seven hours.

Is that…leather?” Some version of this befuddled inner monologue ran through many editors’ heads as Kate Moss sauntered down Bottega Veneta’s spring 2023 runway in Milan. From a distance, they were unmistakably denim and flannel, respectively. Creative director Matthieu Blazy ’s sartorial trickery gave front-rowers a wow moment but was perhaps too subtle to dazzle those streaming the show on Instagram. That outfit (see the shirt above, and Kendall Jenner wearing a version of the look below) embodies an aesthetic shift that’s sweeping the fashion industry. Instead of buying trendy frippery to flaunt in social-media posts, stylish sorts are craving wearable clothes with subtle details like hand-stitched hems, carefully sculpted silhouettes or luxe textures—details that they, and anyone within a 5-foot radius, can appreciate in the moment.
